Ingredients:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Food coloring gels assorted colors
- Royal icing assorted colors
Instructions:
Mix the flour and salt together in a bowl
Mix the butter and sugar in a different bowl until the mixture is smooth
Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix them in well
Add the dry ingredients to the wet ones one at a time and mix them together until a dough forms
Add a different food coloring gel to each piece of dough and knead them together until the color is spread out evenly
Put each piece of colored dough in the fridge for at least an hour after wrapping it in plastic wrap
Set the oven to 350F 175C and heat it up
On a floured surface, roll out each color of dough piece to about 1/4-inch thickness
Using cookie cutters, make the shapes you want and put them on a baking sheet
For 10 to 12 minutes, or until the edges are just beginning to turn golden
Place the cookies on a wire rack to cool all the way down
Make the royal icing in different colors
Use a small paintbrush to carefully spread the royal icing on the cool cookies in a way that looks like embroidery with a brush
Before you serve or package the cookies, let the frosting dry and harden
